Manganese Production

Total world production of manganese alloys reached 13.3 million metric tons in 2007, up by 13% from 2006. As in past years, manganese alloy production was dominated by China, producing approximately 46% (6.2 million mt). All other regions of the world showed increases in production in 2007, as producers tried to keep pace with growing demand from the steel sector.

2007 global production of silico-manganese (SiMn) reached 7.7 million mt, which was greater than the combined production of high carbon ferro-manganese (HC FeMn) and refined ferromanganese (Ref FeMn), their respective totals being 4.45 million mt and 1.1 million mt. SiMn is commonly used in the production of steel long products, critical components in the construction industry. A vivid example of this is China, where domestic SiMn production reached 3.8 million mt (up 18% from 2006) due largely to rapid investment in infrastructure that continues to fuel greater use of long products.

In 2007, the global unit consumption of manganese ferroalloys was approximately 10 kg alloy per mt of steel produced. This figure varies significantly from region to region with the differences related to the steel production process, the quality of raw materials used, (such as iron ore grades) and types of steel products produced.

Manganese ore production

Mn ore (wet) production increased by 12% , reaching 38 million mt, whereas production of Mn ore (in Mn content) was up just over 9%, with 12.8 million Mn units produced.

China was the largest producer at 14 million mt (2.8 million mt of Mn content), followed by South Africa with 5.3 million mt (2.5 million mt in manganese content), Australia, Gabon, Ukraine, India and Brazil producing 4.9 million mt, 3.3 million mt, 2.4 million mt, 2 million mt and 1.7 million mt, respectively (2.2 million mt, 1.6 million mt, 0.7million mt, 0.7million mt and 0.8 million mt in Mn content).
